Dupont Circle

The War of the Roses

Dupont Circle serves as the physical stopping point for Oliver’s run and the setting of a decisive realization: his life is about to change, and he feels unready for what comes next.

Setting in the Scene

After heading down Connecticut Avenue almost at a jog, Oliver reaches Dupont Circle breathless and leans against the fountain rim. The exertion gives the place a concrete role in the scene: his movement ends in a pause, where he has to confront both his physical condition and the upheaval ahead.

Oliver’s Realization

At the fountain, Oliver realizes that he is on the verge of starting a whole new life for which he is totally unprepared. His labored breathing sharpens that sense of vulnerability; he notes that he is in poor physical shape and thinks he might have been better off having a heart attack. Dupont Circle thus marks a moment when the prospect of a new life registers not as an abstraction but as a change he feels unable to meet.
